He was known as “The Father of the English Bible” and a literary genius from Oxford and Cambridge University. He learned Hebrew and Greek fluently just so he could translate the bible to English for the commonfolk. He was strangled and burned for setting the bible free.
The Synopsis
EPISODE 1: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
“He lived in perilous times, at the height of persecution and fear...”
(ENGLAND 1515 AD) Our story begins with the introduction of the early life of William Tyndale; and his dreams of turning a problem into a miracle. He lived in perilous times, at the height of persecution and fear. The Catholic church was the supreme authority on God and the bible. Anyone who tried to go outside the laws of the church was killed for heresy.
William undertakes a master plan to bring harmony and unity between the church and the growing movement known as “The Reform”. His ingenious plan is noble and law-abiding. It seems William was born for a time such as this; the perfect key to a difficult lock. However, despite his best efforts, something goes amiss.
EPISODE 2: a NEW HOPE
William becomes a vagabond in a foreign country. He must live his life on the run, hunted by the Catholic Inquisition. He is translating the New Testament from Greek to English and starting drafts of the Old Testament from Hebrew to English. This had never been done before. He has a small circle of friends who help him hide. He promises to publish the New Testament for the commonfolk, and he does!

Europe is enchanted by his publication and demands more. Queen Anne Boleyn becomes the first royal to own a copy of Tyndale’s New Testament. However, the Catholic church explodes in an uproar and William tops the “Most Wanted” list and his bounty price grows. It becomes harder for him to trust anyone. Even King Henry VIII gets involved and offers a private resolution and protection for William, but not at the price William needs. Another devastating blow happens when William boards a ship that sinks.
EPISODE 3: LEGACY
William recovers from his setbacks and is working on translating the rest of the bible. The bounty on his head grows greater each day. The Catholic church is desperate to silence him as a criminal. The New Testaments he published came under scrutiny because of thousands of errors the Catholic church found. William stands by his work and continues his goals. He finds a peaceful, secure place in Germany with the help of the Reform. A “new friend” enters the picture from the shadows. William trains his new friend and leans on him. But someone in William’s inner circle is a traitor.

One day, William is betrayed and arrested. His life on the run is now over. He is locked in a cold, dark cell for over a year as he awaits execution. He is stripped of all his priesthood and titles. He only makes one request: a bible and a candle to read with, and a coat. He was cold and tortured as he awaited his death penalty. During his time in prison, the warden outside his cell converted his faith, along with his wife, and grieved for Tyndale. He remained a gentleman through and through, and his knowledge of the bible was magnetic.
On October 6 1536, William Tyndale was strangled and burned at the stake for heresy. His final words “Lord, open the King of England’s eyes” would be a blessing that came into fruition three years later, when the bible was released for the public to read in English.
